Do You Have Pillar Articles?

Posted by Jimmy as Blog Tutorial, Opinion, Tips, Writing

What are pillar articles, you may ask. When I first heard about them years ago, I thought to myself, “they are probably really important things” and indeed, they are. Darren Rowse at ProBlogger explains it neatly:

A pillar article is usually a tutorial style article aimed to teach your audience something. Generally they are longer than 500 words and have lots of very practical tips or advice. This article you are currently reading could be considered a pillar article since it is very practical and a good “how-to” lesson.

You would actually find these articles in web sites which are not considered blogs. And I am sure that when you do find these articles, you find them quite useful. That is why pillar articles are important for blogs – they have lasting value and even if a reader stumbles upon them say, a year after you post them, they can still make use of the information in some way.

I have to admit that I have forgotten the concept of pillar articles in the recent days. This is especially true for my personal blogs, wherein often times, I just write what I have been thinking of or what I have been going through. Now that I am reminded of pillar articles and their value, I realize that I just might be able to attract a fresh slew of readers if I start writing a pillar article every now and then. This shouldn’t be too hard for personal blogs as the topics which you can write about are as varied as anything else in this world.

What about you, do you write pillar articles?

I’m like you, in thinking “What can I write a pillar article on for my personal blog?” *scratches head* :)

I have tons of pillar articles. They seem to attract the most traffic from search engines, and are usually what convince new readers to subscribe. The more helpful you can be, the better.

This is my main goal of my initial article writing. Create solid, readable (i.e. not too long), tutorial-like articles which can hopefully be continually revisited.
