Learning From Your Mistakes

Posted by Jimmy as Blog Tutorial, Tips, Writing

Write, write, write. That’s what my previous post was all about. What I didn’t really emphasize in that post is the need for practice. Yes, I did mention that a bit but I believe that it warrants more detail.

Think about it this way – you can write for hours every day, 7 days a week. Heck, you can even write 24 hours if you wish do to so. Yet how will it benefit you if you keep on writing in the same way you have always been writing? How will you benefit if you do not spot those little mistakes that you make and then make the appropriate adjustments?

Therefore, I think it is important to add this aspect to what I presented in the last post. Write, write, and write BUT make sure you pay attention to the details. Sometimes, you might not realize you are making mistakes. Sometimes, it would take others – your readers perhaps – to point it out to you. Don’t resent that, however. Instead, consider those comments as part of your attempt at improving your writing skills. Take them at face value and evaluate your writing through them.

Learning through your experiences is something that is more concrete, I believe. You can read and listen (tips on writing, writing style, and the like) all you want but if you do not actually try them out yourself, then it might not result to anything productive.

Practice indeed makes perfect, but only if you learn from the mistakes that you are bound to commit along the way.
