I have written about pay per post in the past and I am not talking only about the platform going by that name – I am referring to the practice in general. My opinion has not really changed, I still think that it is alright to engage in pay per post practices as long as you are clear about it and you let your readers know which posts are sponsored.

These days, though, it seems as if the pay per post realm is not doing so well. I have not kept it a secret that I am using some of these platforms for my personal blogs and lately, I have not been getting much work from them. One big reason is the fact that my PageRank went down several steps several times. The funny thing is that the only reason I could find for the decline in PageRank is the fact that I was (and am) doing paid posts.

So this question cropped up in my mind – is pay per post still worth it?

I have to say that as time passes by, it seems to me that it just might not be worth it. For one, the more paid posts you put up in your blog, the spammier it tends to look. This can, of course, be avoided by creative writing and inserting of keywords and links. Still, too many of these posts – and you need lots to make a considerable amount of money – is never good.

Another reason is the PageRank issue. You want PageRank, of course, but you can’t get it if you do paid posts – at least, if Google finds out. And you can’t get enough assignments if you have no or low PageRank. It’s the chicken and the egg.

If you are relying largely on paid posts for income from your blog, it might be time to rethink things. I am.

We talked about the importance of identifying the best blogs in the niche you are targeting in the previous post. To recap, it is important to do so because you can learn a lot from the best blogs. You can check out what they are doing right – and wrong – and learn from those things. You can also do a little bit of promotion on the side by leaving comments in these blogs. In this way, you can make your presence felt in the niche that you are targeting.

So how do you actually determine which blogs are the best blogs in a niche? Well, there are certain tools which you can use. These tools are already very popular and the chances are that you have heard of them. You just need to know the specific purpose that you want to use them for and you are good to go.

First there is Technorati. Most any blogger – niche blogger or otherwise – knows about Technorati. You probably already have an account with them. But did you know that you can download a file which contains information on the best 10 blogs in any category? This is basically what we are looking for – the top blogs in a niche. The good thing is that Technorati has a certain degree of authority and you can be sure that the information you are getting is accurate.

Del.icio.us is also another tool to find the best blogs in your niche. Again, you have probably been using Del.icio.us for quite some time now. Take a look again and look for the best blogs on a topic – http://del.icio.us/tag/topic+blog.

What you do with the information you get is up to you – use it to your benefit!

We’ve been looking at ways to make money off your blog for a while now. We have been focusing on paid post programs, however. There is another option for you if you want to create a blog can make you money. Have you ever heard of a niche blog?

Wikipedia describes niche blogging as:

Niche blogging is the act of creating a blog with the intent of using it to market to a particular niche market. While it could be argued that all blogs are, in some form, a niche blog, the term as it applies to marketing refers to a particular kind of blog.

Niche blogs are sometimes referred to as splogs, but this is a misnomer. Even though the desired end result for the niche blogger is to make money, the niche blog itself often contains valuable information. Most pay-per-click advertising is content-sensitive, so it is vital to the niche blogger to have useful content that is related to the chosen niche.

A very specific aspect of niche blog is that it has a tight focus. A niche blogger chooses a specific topic to focus his niche blog on and keeps to that topic all throughout the blog. As you can imagine, there are so many topics that you can choose from. It is vital, however, that you choose the right topic for your own niche blog. There are many considerations in doing so. In the next post, this is what we will be talking about.

We have been talking about paid posts in the past couple of posts. In the previous post, I featured PayPerPost, one of the most – if not the most – popular paid post platform today. Another platform that I use is PayU2Blog. I think they have been around for quite some time as well and they have definitely become quite popular all over the world.

Unlike PayPerPost, you do not have to actively “look” for opportunities with PayU2Blog. The way they operate is by assigning posts to their members. As such, you only have to check your account several times a week for assignments. Another difference is that with PayU2Blog, the assignment requirements are usually constant. That is, the word count and payment are almost always the same. The figures are normally $5 for a 60-word post.

PayU2Blog does not explicitly state the specific requirements for a blog to be approved. What you need to do is make sure that your blog has been around for several months at the very least. You also have to have a considerable amount of traffic. As for PageRank, I do not think that it matters much. Then again, the higher the better. But just FYI, I have a blog that was approved even if it didn’t have PageRank back then. It took me several weeks of submitting my blog before I got an acceptance e-mail, though.

As for the payment, PayU2Blog pays its bloggers every other week through PayPal.

We have to face it – blogging is a good way of making a little money here and there. Though there are some people who see posting paid entries as unethical or unacceptable, this practice has a strong following. If you do not agree with paid posts, that is totally find with me. For those who do agree or who are interested in them, then this entry is for you.

There are now many different companies online which offer paid posting programs. If you are just getting started, which ones should you try out? After all, there is no guarantee that a certain group is reliable and not merely a scam (yes, there are scams out there).

I think the most popular platform at the moment is PayPerPost. They are part of the IZEA company and – don’t quote me on this – have been around the longest. They are also among the most reliable platforms in existence. How does PayPerPost work?

A blogger has to create an account and then submit a blog. They have a panel which reviews blogs to see if they meet the set criteria. They base approval on things like the age of the blog, its traffic, its number of posts, and so on. Once your blog gets approved, you can accept opportunities and get paid for them.

At present, you can qualify for opportunities based on your PageRank (yes it still matters), location, blog category, and so on. The amount for each post ranges from $5 to more than $100. Not bad, eh?

As I mentioned in my previous post today I will be suggesting some ways you can still profit by joining programs such as Pay Per Post and yet ensure that your readers don’t get turned off.

In my opinion the only way to really do this is by making sure that your blog entries stay the same quality (or improve in quality). This wouldn’t be possible if you start spamming your own blog by churning out consumer-generated ads post after post. So the first thing to remember is to post ads in moderation. The truth is that while many bloggers claim that they only write about a product they really like the pull of money is hard to resist and most bloggers find ways to keeping on mentioning products/services a bit too often. Readers can see through this and immediately get turned off. To make sure you only post ads in moderation I suggest that you…

ask a close friend/blogger (who won’t benefit from your blog) to be honest with you and tell you if you are going overboard (meaning your blog is turning spammy)

set a self-imposed limit on the amount of ads you will post in your blog – You can make limit this to once a week or once a day or 1 in every 4 posts.

create a new blog for this specific purpose – If you really want to post as much as you want then it would be better to create a new blog for this specific purpose

One of the surest ways to earn money through your blog is by joining a program that allows you to blog about a products and/or services and be paid for doing so. This kind of blog advertising is called user-generated ads or consumer generated ads. They were popularized by Pay Per Post but now there are lots of other programs out there that you can join.

The good thing about consumer generated ads is that is many programs you will be paid simply for writing a review about the product or for merely mentioning the product and linking to the product website. In some cases the amount of traffic your website gets or the amount of clicks made on the link you posted also matters but the important thing is that no matter what you already make a sure profit from the single post.

Like anything good though joining programs such as Pay Per Post have a catch and the main negative thing about it is that many readers are turned off by blogs that post such kind of content. This is especially true if your blog is mostly composed of sponsored entries. It can also lower the quality of your posts because you will have to find a way to mention the product/service. Some readers and even bloggers see this as compromising their blogs. In my next post I give some suggestions on how you can make money through these programs while avoiding compromising your blog’s quality and credibility.

If you are thinking of starting a new blog for monetization purposes finding the perfect theme or topic to blog about is of utmost importance. Undoubtedly you have been reading plenty of advice (or at least plan on reading them) about blogging and monetization. With all the advice found in the internet you would think that making money through your blog is an easy thing. However, if you really think about it you will find that the vast majority of blogs do make money but not enough to really be relied on as a consistent and sole source of income. There are plenty of reasons for this and to be able to make money you had better really listen to advice on SEO, blog design, and all the writing tips. What’s funny about blog monetization advice is that bloggers rarely discuss how important finding a perfect theme for your blog is.

As I have mentioned earlier finding the perfect topic to blog about is of utmost importance. The reason for this is very simple. The blogosphere is composed of MILLIONS of blogs with thousands being started each day. What this means is that though there are lots of people who go on the internet to read blogs there are just as many other blogs to read. What this translates to is stiff competition. If you are blogging about something that very few people will be interested in you can be sure that you will also get very few traffic, and thus, even less income from your blog. On the other hand, blogging about a topic that is very popular isn’t also always a good idea especially if you are not that knowledgeable about that topic. This reason for this is because a popular topic will surely have lots of blogs already about it, and unless you are an expert most people won’t bother spending time reading your blog, as opposed to the experts’ blogs. Instead what you should do is spend a lot of time thinking about what your blog really should be about.

On my next post I will be discussing how you should about finding a blog topic that would suit you.
