Loving the Link Love
Posted by Jimmy as Linking, Opinion How much do you link to other blogs and websites? Spreading link love is, I think, like good karma. As they say, "What goes around, comes around." If you spread link love you might not see immediate results but it DOES help your blog in several ways. 1. Ups your user-friendliness - Blogs that mention sites or other blog posts without linking to the exact page they are referring to is one of my major irritations. I end up having to search for their source when I could just have got to where I could get more info in just one click had ...Comments Off
Better Backup than Sorry
Posted by Jimmy as Blog Tutorials News I wonder if there’s any statistics on the number of bloggers that keep a backup of all their blog posts. I used to NOT keep backup copies. My reason for this is simple: I trusted Wordpress. Now I am not saying that Wordpress is not trustworthy but it is always better to be safe than sorry. I’m saying this from experience. About a year ago while we were undergoing a redesign, for whatever reason, some technical booboo happened and several of our latest blog posts disappeared without a trace. This happened in several different blogs. Luckily I have a habit of saving ...Comments Off
Blogging Rewards
Posted by Jimmy as Opinion As a blogger what rewards do you get from what you are doing? Obviously lots of pro-bloggers do what they do for the monetary rewards and/or reputation building. But is this the only thing that you’ll get from blogging, and more importantly are these the valuable things you’ll get out of blogging? I would be a hypocrite to say that the additional income from pro-blogging is something I love to spend but looking at the long run I think the other rewards far outweigh the monetary gains. A couple of treasures blogging has brought me: Knowledge – Needing to come up with ...Comments (6)
Color Schemes: Back to Basics
Posted by Jimmy as Blog Tutorials News
Let’s go back to basics and discuss the importance of color schemes because I realized, after stumbling upon a hideous blog, that there are still people out there who are totally clueless about which colors are readable and pleasing to the eye, or are maybe just plain colorblind.
Anyway, when choosing color schemes a couple of things you should consider include usability and feel.
Basic usability – This includes readability and contrast between clickable elements and static ones. You should use colors that will contrast enough yet not have the contrast be too glaring ...

How To Post More Frequently
Posted by Jimmy as Opinion, Tips, Writing Posting frequency is something that has been discussed A LOT. New bloggers ask about posting frequency. More seasoned bloggers debate about the optimal frequency. I would not go as far as to dictate a specific number but I do know and believe that you should post as often and as regularly as possible. But how do you increase your posting frequency? What if you find yourself flagging when it comes to posting in your blog? Let’s look at some things that can work for you. Be systematic. Many bloggers who have let their blogs go down ...Comments Off
The 10 Blogging Commandments
Posted by Jimmy as Opinion Are you a religious person? Or let’s say you follow a certain faith. Don’t worry if you are averse to the idea – this post is not really all about religion and what you believe in. I just thought that it would be interesting to feature the 10 Blogging Commandments according to Evangelical Alliance. (Comments mine.) 1. You shall not put your blog before your integrity. – Something that some bloggers out there should pay attention to, I think! 2. You shall not make an idol of your blog. – ahh, I think that if you reach this point, ...Comments Off
Using MyBlogLog And Blog Catalog
Posted by Jimmy as Community Building, Opinion I talked about how you can use Twitter to attract more people to your blog in the previous post; people who might not even know that you exist otherwise. There are other ways by which you can gain that much needed and much desired exposure for your blog and one of them is by joining blog directories. I think that this topic has been much talked about in the past – both here at Blog Tutorials and other blogs and web sites. And this is for a reason – blog directories are very effective in helping other ...Comment (1)
Tweet Your Way To More Traffic
Posted by Jimmy as Opinion Twitter has been around for quite some time and it has garnered a humongous amount of followers. Indeed, it has become so widespread that the core concept has already been “copied.” You now have Plurk and other similar social platforms operating around the same idea. If Twitter has been able to achieve such heights of success, then it must be doing something right, right? I have to say this right now – I have been using Twitter for a year or so but I have not really optimized it in such a way as to benefit ...Comments (2)
Self Revelation And Blogging
Posted by Jimmy as Opinion, Writing Remember my post on being too personal in your blog (if there is even such a thing)? Apparently, this line of thinking has also hit other bloggers. It is not just me who has been wondering about personal stuff in blogs. Andrew G.R. over at The Blog Herald wrote something similar early last month. He wrote: The more I immerse myself into the blogosphere, the more of myself I feel slipping away. By day, I’m conservative and private. By night, I speak my mind and share personal details of my life. Is blogging my reawakening? Or is it ...Comments Off
Is There Such A Thing As Too Personal?
Posted by Jimmy as Opinion, Writing I seem to remember posing a similar question in a post a long time ago. How personal can you get when writing for your blog? Is there such a thing as too personal? These questions came to mind as I visited one of the blogs that I regularly haunt. This blog – which I shall not mention here – is a personal blog in all aspects of the term. The blogger, whom I shall call A,is a very good writer. She can make you laugh and can engage you wonderfully in her writing. In fact, ...Comments Off

Is Your Blog W3C Compliant?
Last night I checked my personal blog’s code hoping I can proudly display the W3C Validated Button. Since I use Blogger and do not really do anything to clean up the code (beyond adding Alt-tags to the images I embed) I wasn’t surprised at all to find that my blog contained lots of errors – [...]
