[...] Ia of Blog Tutorials lists a few reasons why Link Trains can be appealing to bloggers, including the plain fact that they can be rewarding. He says “You are helping other bloggers and they help you.” True. He wisely goes on, I should point out, to note the downsides as well, including the biggie: “Link trains can even be considered as spam or even link farms-and can therefore be penalized by Google!” [...]

Link trains are gold. Just like any other method there is always a group of people that either just want to find the loopholes to help their ranks, but at the same time they are there to bring those loopholes to light and help those ranking institutions fix their faults.

Technorati faves wouldn't even be known about if it wasn't for this type of list by large amounts of people. Why do I say that? Look how easy it is to get into the Top 100. If you have a group of 25 people you can get to the Top 100 in a couple weeks.

Believe me. The traffic from such endeavors is minimal, if given at all. These are quick rank fixes over a few months. Nothing more. They put you on the map and you do with that what you can to make a few bucks. If you visit your friends in these endeavors you will certainly benefit from that exposure, make new blog buddies, and in turn create a large group of regular readers.

Ultimately it is proper post writing, good information, popular news, keyword density, and those evil text link requests that push you up the Google search ranks. Those lists? Not so much other than Page Rank. Page Rank is just a number. Finding good keywords to write about and niche in Google is way more important to drive traffic. Then getting linked using those keywords.

The people that do this do post great information about these things. This information is missing in Google. Those that know that information is missing decide that they are going to write about it. Filling the search need.

These lists are very MINIMAL in what kind of things they do for bloggers ranking wise. They will help you make friends and bring your blogs to light, but they really aren't going to do a ton for you.

Technorati is a completely flawed system anyways. Everything about it is easily gamed. Some people need a decent Technorati rank, but most don't. IF anyone was actually using Technorati, it wouldn't have been so easy to get on it. Before these lists I'd speculate that the #100 bog had been faved less than 50 times. 50 TIMES! Top 100 BLOGS IN THE WORLD? I don't think so.

Actually they're spam. I wrote about that in Technorati Spam: http://www.notesfromatooluser.com/2007/06/technorati_spam.html

Remember the system you're trying to game isn't there for your benefit. Its there for the end users.
