Your files, your blog and FTP
Posted by Professor as Blogging Tools, Terminology
Most of of blogging newbies start out with hosted blogging services like Blogger, LiveJournal and these days, WordPress.com. Those blogging services make it easy for newbies to get into writing, posting pictures and other kinds of files rather easily. However, when you start having your own webspace and your own installation of a blogging software like WordPress, things could get a little bit more difficult in terms of maintaining your blog. At the same time, it could give you more leverage in terms of making your blog personal.
What is FTP?
It is file transfer protocol. It is basically is what it is called. So if you have WordPress installed on your server and you want to use particular themes and plugins, you could use FTP in order to put your theme files and theme files there. You could use an FTP Client such as Filezilla or the Firefox extension, Fireftp, in order to transfer your files. It is quite easy once you have an FTP Client.
What else can you do with your FTP client?
You could browse the files that you have on your computer, as well as the ones that you have on the server. That way, you could check if you were indeed able to transfer all of your theme files, widgets or the plugin files. It is important that you complete upload those files to the server so that the theme would render properly when selected. The plugin or widgets might not work if you lack some files. You could also change the file permissions of your files on the server (where your blog is).
This is one of the essential things you need to know especially when you are thinking of having your own blog hosted on a server. To blog actually takes a lot of responsibility. Hopefully, you are already prepared for more things to learn along the way
