Just Do It

Posted by Jimmy as Writing

This isn’t a Nike ad but their slogan is something that all bloggers can learn a lesson from. Actually, it’s a motto we can apply in all aspects of our lives but of course it’s blogging we’re concerned with here.

As a blogger one of the things that we struggle with is coming up with posts regularly. Writing blocks is as common as anything can get and is something that must be overcome even before we even worry over the quality of the post. I have written about overcoming blocks so many times but there’s just no overemphasizing the need to get over this particular hump.

One of the best advice anyone can heed when it comes to overcoming writer’s block is to just write. JUST DO IT! Start typing. You might not even know what topic you really want to focus on. On the other hand, you might know but can’t figure out where to start. Everyone knows that it’s that first sentence that sucks big time. The important thing is that you push yourself to just get something on that blank screen. Once you get the juices flowing it wouldn’t be as hard. You can after all always edit things later. It’s not like you’re etching your draft in stone. Even if you do change your mind on what to write about that day you will still at least have gotten your juices flowing. If this happens don’t forget to save your draft (which you have rejected for the day) so that on days when you get another mental block you can probably look it over and just edit. Hopefully you can use the piece or at least ideas from that piece another time.

While I don’t often find myself at a loss for words or writing topics, I still feel that moment of inertia when I first open a blank post screen. This was a great pep talk that even an old prolific blogger can use.

    Thanks.
